The Cannstatter Volksfest, (Oktoberfest)often called the Stuttgart Beer Festival, is one of the most significant cultural and economic events in Baden-Württemberg. It dates back to 1818, when King Wilhelm I of Württemberg and Queen Katharina initiated it as a celebration of the region's recovery from famine caused by a volcanic eruption in Indonesia (Mount Tambora, 1815), which led to a "year without summer." *
This year will be the 178th festival. Non-continuous due to wars and Covid-19

Stepping into a German beer tent—whether at the Cannstatter Volksfest or Oktoberfest—is like entering a world of lively tradition, music, and camaraderie. Here’s what the atmosphere is like:
1. The Buzzing Energy 🍻🎶
The moment you walk in, you're met with a roaring mix of laughter, clinking beer mugs, and traditional German folk music played by a live brass band. The air is thick with the scent of roasting meats, fresh pretzels, and frothy beer.
2. Traditional BLACK FOREST Decor 🎡🏰
The interior is adorned with blue-and-white drapery (Bavaria’s colors), wooden benches, and long communal tables, encouraging a social and festive vibe. Some tents feature painted murals depicting Alpine landscapes or scenes from German folklore.
3. Dirndls, Lederhosen, and Prost! 🥨🍺
Most guests and servers dress in traditional Bavarian attire—women in dirndls and men in lederhosen. Every few minutes, someone starts a cheers ("Prost!"), and the entire tent raises their steins to join in, often breaking into song.
4. The Music and Dancing 🎷💃
A live oompah band plays classics like Ein Prosit (which signals everyone to drink), Schlager hits, and even modern rock and pop songs. As the night goes on, people stand on benches, dance, and sing along—sometimes linking arms with strangers in the spirit of celebration.
5. Food and Beer Flowing Freely 🍗🍻
Waitresses carry massive beer steins (Maß, 1-liter mugs) with impressive skill, and the beer is always fresh, locally brewed, and strong. Hearty Bavarian dishes like pork knuckles, sausages, roasted chicken, and giant pretzels are served non-stop.
6. The Late-Night Festivities 🌙🎊
As the evening progresses, the tent turns into one big party, with everyone singing, toasting, and making new friends. The vibe is warm, welcoming, and full of Gemütlichkeit—a German word for a cozy, cheerful atmosphere of togetherness.
